New Details Surface About Samsung’s Purported Round Smartwatch

Samsung is widely considered as the initiator of the smart watch industry. They were the first to introduce the one of a kind smart watch in September 2013. Following the success of the first smart watch, the Galaxy Gear, they launched a whole line of smartwatches which included the Gear 2, Gear Neo, and lastly the Gear S.

Considering the trend it was a surprise for many that Samsung did not launch a smart watch at the Mobile World Congress 2015 with the Samsung S6 and Samsung S6 Edge. Where Samsung has stayed ahead of market trends in the smart watch category, they have not adopted the round face design as yet. LG and Motorola are going strong and are working towards the launch of this round face smartwatch which would be a first for the smartwatch business.

Upon questioning, the Executive Vice president of the Samsung Mobile Marketing, Young-hee Lee, answered that the sole reason for not introducing the smartwatch alongside the S6 series was to break the status quo. Samsung was associated with launching the mobile phone and wearable simultaneously; thus, they now want to change this cycle and develop something more unique. The company requires time and resources to invest in their unique upcoming idea; hence, they have halted the launch of wearables for the time being. Mr. Lee’s statement coincides with the application submitted last May, by the company which entails the design of the round smart watch. According, to the application the round face smartwatch consists of a rotating bezel ring and a crown shaped power button. The patent application also mentions the special features including; image recognition, barcode register, and gesture controls all of which would add to the experience of wearing a smartwatch.

The Samsung Orbis aims towards taking the experience of wearable to a whole new level. The round watch would not only serve the purpose of a hand accessory as served by the previous smart watches. In fact, Orbis could be multi-purpose and may be used as a keychain, necklace, and an armband. People take pride in wearing these luxurious smart watches; therefore, the Orbis would also serve the purpose of being a luxurious item, given the features it would contain. Lenovo’s Mobile Division Continues to Disappoint as Revenue Falls by 6%

Lenovo has been a PC market leader for quite some time but its mobile business has not done so well despite the acquisition of Motorola in 2014. The company reported its first quarter of fiscal year 2017 financial results with net income of $173 million on revenue of $10.1 billion. The accounted slow growth in the smartphone division was offset by PC sales.

The company also beat analyst estimates. According to a poll of 13 analysts conducted by Thomson One Analytics, the company was expected to earn net income of $133.4 million in the quarter on revenue of $9.7 billion. Lenovo has already said that it would now shift its focus toward smartphones with heavy marketing expected in China and the US.

“Our PC business delivered strong profits and our smartphone business stabilized compared to last quarter,” said Yuanqing Yang, Chairman and CEO of Lenovo. “Going forward, in PCs we will focus on high growth segments and leverage industry consolidation to resume growth. In smartphones, we will leverage innovative, differentiated products and continue to shift to higher price bands to drive growth and turn around this business.”

Lenovo’s revenue during the first quarter was down 6% on a year-over-year (YoY) basis. Despite the decrease in revenue, the company’s net profit increased 64% YoY as a result of the sale of property and cost cutting measures

Lenovo had announced last year that it would cut down cost by $1.35 billion and also lay off 3,200 employees as part of its restructuring process. The decision taken earlier is now paying dividends. Also, the sale of its Beijing property in which it gained $132 million, played a pivotal role in boosting its net profit. Such gains are reported as one-off gains.

Operating profit for the period came in at $245 million, more than double of what it reported in the same quarter last year. Operating profit is considered to be an important element to review a company’s performance. However, for Lenovo, the problem was that operating profit included the gain from the sale of assets, which is not its core business.

PC and tablets sales were reported at $7 billion, down 7% YoY. During the quarter, 13.2 million PCs were shipped, which represents a decline of 2.3% YoY with the overall PC market shrinking by 4.1% during the same period. Despite the decline, it managed to be the number one PC manufacturer with 21.1% market share for the 13th straight quarter.

Lenovo will do whatever it takes to achieve its aim of 30% global market share. Profit margin from PC sales was mainly driven from high margins reported in China, Latin America and Brazil. Tablet business was profitable with double digit growth, though Lenovo did not give out any numbers on it.

Mobile division continued to report losses as sales went down by 6% on a YoY basis to $1.7 billion in the recently closed quarter. Global smartphone shipments during the period were down 31% compared to the same quarter last year despite the acquisition of Motorola. Lenovo does not expect its mobile division to turn profitable before October 2017.

Konami recently released Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 to fairly strong reviews and it’s also the first soccer title this year. It has released prior to EA Sports FIFA 17 — and honestly speaking its quite difficult being a soccer fan to choose between the two. You would want to buy both but which will be more fun?

From what we know so far, with PES 2017 there's more focus on gameplay than presentation. We do know the latter is where FIFA has always excelled but when it comes to the action on the pitch PES 2017 is a clear winner. That said, the FIFA has really improved gameplay wise over the years and with its rather complete package it edges the PES series.

So PES 2017 could do for most soccer purists despite it being arcady. It’s quite challenging as the adaptive AI carefully studies your plays and tries to counter it making it a close battle for goals. Now you can even have tactics like Jurgen Klopp’s gegenpressing that has made Liverpool one of the more exciting teams to watch in the Barclays Premier League. Liverpool is officially licensed in PES 2017 as well.

FIFA 17 will release on September 27 loaded with new features and even a brand new story mode. There are the usual tweaks to the gameplay such as the Active Intelligence System. The overhauls along with a brand new Frostbite engine make the game quite an experience and we’ve only played just the demo. The game plays differently from FIFA 16 as we could see how AI was a bit more intelligent this time and would catch us if we made any mistakes. We have yet to try The Journey of Alex Hunter in full but he’s shown as a Manchester United player who is about to star in his first game on the bench against Chelsea.

It’s the first game of the season and the story goes on from there. You have the choice when it comes to responding to other teammates — so we know the story can change depending on your response. At the same time, you also can either have a fiery or cool relationship with your teammates.

Jose Mourinho makes an appearance as manager if you play against or for Manchester United and we expect to see him in The Journey as well, along with other top Premier League managers such as Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and Chelsea's Antonio Conte.

In all honesty we think FIFA 17 has an edge with a better package but PES 2017 may just satisfy gameplay enthusiasts more. Ask us, we say you try both and make your call. We are lucky that both Konami and EA Sports have made two excellent soccer simulation titles and maybe this year its better to own both.

A user’s experience of the Phantom 6 plus 21MP camera

Mobile phone cameras have given everyone the chance to capture amazing images whenever they please, but it takes expertise and a good mobile camera to capture truly amazing images.

As a hobbyist Photographer, my choice of mobile phones over the years has been hugely dependent on its camera quality.

I have had some of the best performing camera phones in the past but with the space of technological advancement in mobile phone camera hardware-the need for upgrade becomes imperative, as most of my old devices can no longer compete with the latest trends in town.

TECNO’s first device with 21MP Sony IMX230 camera.

The news for the latest phantom flagship device from TECNO was everywhere and I also read that it’s the first device from the company to be launched outside of Africa. The device, which was launched in Armani Hotel inside the world tallest building was, tagged the beast online. It packs a deca-core processor, 4GB of RAM and 21 MP real camera.

I got the Phantom 6 plus few weeks after its launch and I have loved it for its camera ever since then. The device is fitted with 21 mega pixel Sony rear camera and 8MP front camera.

Zooming in on any object can activate the Super Zoom mode.

Microsoft AI Beats Humans at Speech Recognition

Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence and Research Unit earlier this week reported that its speech recognition technology had surpassed the performance of human transcriptionists.

The team last month published a paper describing its system's accuracy, said to be superior to that of IBM's famed Watson artificial intelligence.

The error rate for humans on the widely used NIST 2000 test set is 5.9 percent for the Switchboard portion of the data, and 11.3 percent for the CallHome portion, the team said.

The team improved on the conversational recognition system that outperformed IBM's by about 0.4 percent, it reported.

That improvement is important, noted Anne Moxie, senior analyst at Nucleus Research.

While speech recognition provides an easier way for humans to interact with technology, "it won't see adoption until it has extremely low error rates," she told TechNewsWorld.

Google, IBM and Microsoft are among the companies working on speech recognition systems, but Microsoft is the closest to overcoming the error rate issue, Moxie said. "Therefore, its technology's the most likely to see adoption."

Nintendo Switches It Up

After months of speculation and buildup, Nintendo on Thursday officially unveiled its new gaming system, the Nintendo Switch. Previously known only by the codename "NX," rumors about this latest video game console began last year with a hint from Satoru Iwata, the company's late president.

At the time Iwata suggested only that Nintendo was working on a new video game system, and few details have leaked since then.

The Switch is Nintendo's first home gaming system since it launched the Wii U in 2012. That system is widely regarded as a disappointment -- Nintendo has sold just under 62 million units worldwide. That compares to the sale of more than 101 million units of its predecessor, the Nintendo Wii, since its release in 2006.

The Switch is not Nintendo's first comeback effort, however. Wii sales were nearly five times greater than the number of Nintendo GameCube units sold since its release in 2001.

This time around the video game publisher/developer community already has thrown early support behind the new system. Nintendo has announced more than 40 third-party partners for the Switch, including notable publishers such as Activision, Bandai Namco, Electronic Arts, Take-Two Interactive Software and Ubisoft.

The system is scheduled for a March release, but pricing has not been released.

The Nintendo Switch could sell 2.85 million units globally in 2017 if launched by the end of March, IHS has forecast.

How to properly wipe your smartphone’s data

 You’re ready to replace your aging smartphone with a newer model, but how do you plan on removing all the content that’s on your existing phone?
   If you answered “factory reset,” here’s something you might not know: it doesn’t properly remove everything.

   Restoring your phone to factory settings deletes the file system of your data, but it doesn’t actually overwrite the data.

   Yep, a 14 year-old with easily-accessible software could potentially retrieve your photos, videos, documents, messages, passwords, and more.

   To avoid your data falling into the wrong hands, the following are some ways to fully wipe your smartphone clean before you sell, donate or trade-in your device.
   
Encrypt the data 
   A factory reset will work, so long as you encrypt the phone first. For Android users, if you existing phone runs Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or newer, your data will already be encrypted by default.
    If you’ve got an older Android OS, you’ll want to add encryption as it will require someone to have a PIN or password to access your data.
   In most cases, go to
>Settings
> Security
> Encryptphone.
    It can take a while for this process to complete, so be sure to have your phone plugged into an AC outlet.

   On a Samsung Galaxy, you’ll go to
> Settings
> Lock screen & security
> Protect encrypted data.
   You’ll have the option to encrypt the SD memory card as well, if your phone takes one and you have one installed, but you’ll likely remove this external storage anyway if you’re giving away your phone.    
   Be sure to also sign out (and then delete) your accounts, such as Google and Samsung (on a Galaxy device), just to be safe.
 
   Now go ahead and do the factory reset, which is usually found in the Backup & reset tab in your Settings.

   For iPhone, iOS 5 or later also includes hardware encryption when you set a passcode. This makes it very difficult for anyone who tries to recover your data.
   First, be sure to turn off all services, starting with > Find My iPhone
> Settings
> iCloud
> Find My iPhone, and then signing out of iCloud completely.

   For iOS 7 and newer, choose Delete Account. Sign out of other services, like iMessage, and Apple ID.
  Now start the wipe process by going to
> Settings
>General
> Reset
> Erase All Content and Settings.
   Rather than use the operating system’s built-in tools, you can also download an app to handle the wipe for you. Examples include Symantec’s Norton Security, Pinellas Codeworks’ Secure Wipe, and ProtectStar’s iShredder 4, to name a few.

Remote wipe
   Locking a smartphone with a PIN or password isn't enough. Instead, all phone makers include tools to remotely wipe the data from a lost or stolen smartphone. If you misplaced your iPhone, sign into iCloud.com on a computer and select Find My Phone or launch Apple’s Find My iPhone app on another iOS device or on a Mac.

   Find My iPhone is available for free at the App Store. For both, you can see where your device is on a map, along with the date and time it was last located there, along with the phone’s current battery level. If the phone isn’t locked with a PIN, you can do this remotely. Choose the option to wipe the data clean if you don’t want to take a chance of it being accessed.

   With Android, Google’s own Android Device Manager is a free download from the Google Playstore. Or you can log into android.com/devicemanager on a PC or Mac.

For either method, you’ll first be prompted to sign into your Google account. You might have your phone ring loudly in case it’s somewhere nearby (even if it’s on silent). If it’s not nearby -- perhaps left at a coffee shop or in the car -- you can locate your Android phone on a map in real-time. Similar to iPhone, if you can’t retrieve your phone you can easily wipe all of the data on your device.

HTC leak Android-powered fitness smartwatch.

A Weibo user has leaked a series of photos that purportedly show HTC’s upcoming Android-powered smartwatch, codenamed ‘Halfbeak’.

As you can gather from the photos, the device sports a circular 360 x 360 pixel display and will also depend on the brand of popular fitness equipment manufacturer Under Armour.

According to Engadget, the Weibo leaker claims the model in the photos is a project that has since been put on hold – but don’t be too surprised if HTC eventually releases a smartwatch with a similar design.

It is targeted at fitness enthusiasts, the timepiece has a rubber strap, a heart rate sensor on the back, as well as two physical navigation buttons on the side.


This isn’t the first time HTC has joined forces with Under Armour.

 Back in 2015, the two companies partnered up for another fitness wearable called Grip. The device was eventually shelved in favor of another wristband tracker - the UA Band.

 The right answer is YES by simply using an industrial saw and massive belt sander, a guy shaves off just enough of his iPhone 7’s edge to make the sides flat. And you know what? It looks rad.

   Removing the rounded edges gives the iPhone 7 an industrial look though the big challenge is you may not be able to find a case that fits the iPhone after using the mod.

   Though this mod would be possible in most home workshops. Just in-case you don’t have a gigantic, computer controlled saw? Use a table saw and crosscut sled.
 
The results should be the same. Or you could ruin the phone.

Turkey blocks Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and GitHub to stop email leaks.

Turkey reportedly blocked cloud storage services including Google Drive, Dropbox and Microsoft’s OneDrive, as well as code hosting service GitHub on Saturday, according to Turkey Blocks.
The government is believed to have done so in a bid to suppress the leak of emails belonging to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak, who is the son-in-law of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

 

   The move to block these services, reported by censorship monitoring group Turkey Blocks, is likely a means to stop people from hosting the email dumps on their accounts and making it more widely available.

The 17GB leak, which is believed to span 57,623 emails dating from April 2000 to the end of this September, was released by hacking group Red hack.

   An order from an Ankara court concerning the investigation of the group pointed to the authenticity of the leak According to The Daily Dot, which received the email dump, the correspondence shows how Erdogan used his position of power to influence the media and prompt the publishing of select information in pro-government newspapers.

   Turkey Blocks noted that Google Drive had been unblocked on Sunday.
The country has a long history of blocking internet services, with a view to control what citizens can read about its government online.

   It blocked Wikileaks in July following a leak of emails from Turkey’s rolling political party. In March, it barred Web users from accessing Twitter and Facebook after a car bomb exploded in Ankara.
