Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) Idowu Oyewole was yesterday shot dead by three gunmen.
Sources said the gunmen attacked him at his home on the Owo/Akure Express road.
It was learnt Oyewole, 45, attempted to rescue his neighbour, whose home was being invaded by the assailants.
One of his sons, Dare, said: “Daddy was eating around 7.30 pm on Wednesday when our neighbour’s son called that there are robbers in their house.
“He took his service pistol and followed the boy to their apartment to dislodge the bandits.
“When they heard my dad’s footsteps, they started shooting and my father was injured.”
A neighbour, who pleaded for anonymity, said Oyewole ran to his apartment and told us to lock the door because there were gunmen on the street.
“We could not locate him till morning when we saw his body on the ground.”
Another neighbour alleged that after the gunmen shot the officer, they came to his apartment and took his son, who was playing outside, hostage.
‘’They asked my wife to open the door or they will kill my son.
‘’They used cutlass to hit my son on the head after waiting for 30 minutes.’’
Police Public Relations Officer Mr Femi Joseph, who confirmed the killing of the officer attached to the Mobile Unit, said the police had begun investigation.
Joseph described the late Oyewole as a disciplined and hard working officer.
