Russian ‘river of blood’ is caused pollution from a metal factory

A river in the far north of Russia has turned blood red, startling locals and prompting an investigation into possible chemical pollution.

The natural resources and environment ministry said that the transformation of the Daldykan River, in the Norilsk region, might have been caused by a pipeline break at a metallurgical factory owned by Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium.

Environmental groups are concerned about the danger to fish and have also blamed the company for the apparent pollution of the river, which lies within the Arctic Circle.
